It’s here at
early dawn the
eye stretches thin
past winter’s fog,
as a bridal veil;
rhythmic dripping
of January’s thaw
down contours
of stick-built home
past metal gutter.
Drops trickle
in dollops of
crystal snow
breathlessly
holding their place.
Dog walks atop
icescape
near a day ago;
now swaggering
steps… sucking sounds.
Bird’s soprano chirp
authors added melody;
road traffic
beneath thick pine
bring baritone voice.
A stir in forest
when fiddler emerges,
grey squirrel, too
confused by dripping
in winter wood.
Maestro has
set day’s pace
somewhere on high,
from godly place
soften snow and smiled.
Last week we had our 3 day January thaw. The world changes just a little bit on those days. The hope of spring begins to sprout. Linking up with dVerse later today…

“Maestro has
set day’s pace
somewhere on high,
from godly place
soften snow and smiled”
– and for sure God is smiling at this and on your poem’s cover… wonderful!
smiles…
I just love the word dollop!
Pretty cool. 2 days ago my parents (in Canada) had a daily high of a full 2 degrees higher than we here in Temperate Texas. We only reached 51, they 53. But the Chinook up and chinned off again, leaving them with -20 last night!
I hope those little birdies had some snacks during the thaw! poor little things. But I guess they know what they’re doing and where to be until spring, all part of The Maestro’s plan for their soprano songs.
xoxo
Wonderful capture!
There are lots of fabulous images here. I hate it when we get a false spring – which happens several times every winter here!
I love the idea of a grey squirrel confused by dripping … ace
January’s thaw & refreeze was in full effect today in Washington – almost made me fall on my butt about five times while I was walking around campus! Thanks for sprouting that hope of spring. It can’t come soon enough!
musical, clear and vibrant description of a thawing winter..well done
It was such a beautiful reprieve, wasn’t it? This is lovely and beautifully written… but now, we’re all frozen up again!
Yes, same here, almost two feet of snow, all gone… This is a lovely portrait of what it looks and feels and sounds like. And I love the photo!
You enliven a phenomenon I do not experience and I greatly appreciate your details and imagery.
Lovely…eye stretches thin
past winter’s fog,
as a bridal veil….great lines.
Your ending here was my favorite part. I love that you referred to God as Maestro. But then again, if He isn’t, who is?
Can hear the dripping (timpani!) k.
Absolutely stunning imagery at work here, gives me a chill! Easy serenity and peace. I’d like to have some of that!
wonderful write! this winter here in michigan has been thawing and freezing like mad… smiles
A beautiful evocation of the season.
dawn, ending with a smile. this is lovely.
A beautiful seasonal piece. Perfect for January.
Beautifully expressed. If only we still HAD that thaw… Sigh.
Lovely images of nature!
Dew collects
On winter’s
Melting suspects
A lovely winter picture you have captured and shared… I especially love the ending.
A beautiful capture of the winter dripping and melting ~ There is peace and gentleness here ~
nice..winter’s fog as a bridal veil…maestro has set days pace..wonderful capture of the magic of nature…so gentle..
beautiful imagery, love the picture, too! the ‘bridal veil’… amazing.
I am thankful we don’t usually get cold enough winters to need a thaw, but I would welcome it if I did. I do not like cold and love the beginning of spring. I also really like the picture you included. It took me a moment to see what it was. Peace, Linda
The stir in the forest is inspiring is it not?
I can watch for hours as nature moves with winter
Your words are a song of January’s dance
Thanks so for your visit
