As endings come and go,
the clock holds no time
for promises broken
or forgotten principles.
Reflections crack the mirror,
layered with frosting of time;
we see that which pleases,
not the reality which is to come.
Look hard and long,
then walk away, precious
hope cradled in hand;
as endings come and go
one can acquire lessons
which time leaves behind.
“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror: for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.” James 1:23-24

/ January 1, 2012“Look hard and long” -It’s difficult, I think, even with the aid of a mirror, to really see ourselves. We have to really make an effort, and we can use all the help we can get.
I wish all the best for you and family in 2012; I’ve enjoyed your poetry this past year.

/ January 1, 2012I like how the picture fits with each of the poem and the Bible verse; sometimes we think we’re moving pleasingly forward when in truth it’s backward. You have a pair of powerful metaphors here — the mirror and the clock — and combining them with the frosting of time (which I took at first to be a cake image, cuz of the layers…I had this seriously good chocolate layer cake on New Year’s Eve, lol) might be something to expand on in a longer work too.
